Dodgers activate lefty reliever Kuo
Posted by dOs1 Monday, July 27, 2009 at 6:19 PM
ST. LOUIS -- The Dodgers welcomed back reliever Hong-Chih Kuo Monday but still don't have a confirmed starter for Friday night in Atlanta.
The day after Jason Schmidt lasted only three-plus innings and spotted Florida a five-run head start, manager Joe Torre met with the veteran. Torre said no decision has been reached on who will start when Schmidt's turn comes up, which, coincidentally, falls on the same day as the Trade Deadline.
"He still doesn't know where he's at and he's honest about it," Torre said. "He'll have his bullpen session tomorrow and we'll make a decision. We're still thinking it over."
General manager Ned Colletti might make the decision for Torre if he succeeds in acquiring a starting pitcher. The Dodgers have scouted Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, as well as other second-tier starters like Aaron Harang.
The Dodgers have a 13-man pitching staff with the addition of Kuo. The relievers with significant starting experience are Jeff Weaver, who has made five starts this year, Claudio Vargas and rookie James McDonald. Torre prefers to hold back Weaver for long-relief duty; Vargas, coming off right elbow problems, hasn't been stretched out long enough to be a logical option; McDonald opened the season as the fifth starter and lost the job but has pitched well in relief since returning from a Minor League demotion.
Another in-house option is left-hander Eric Stults, who started very effectively after Hiroki Kuroda's April injury until Stults sprained his thumb in May. Stults has won his past four starts for Triple-A Albuquerque, including a win in a day game Monday, which would seem to rule him out as he'd have only three days' rest were he to return and pitch for the Dodgers on Friday night.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers activated Kuo for Monday night's game, nearly three months after putting him on the disabled list with another in his endless series of left elbow injuries that had many in the organization fearing for his career.
"It's up to me to screw him up," Torre said sarcastically, knowing that Kuo is a risk with every pitch. "We'll limit him to one inning, starting the inning, until he's more comfortable, and one warmup. He's gone back-to-back [last week at Class A] and it wasn't an issue. Beyond one inning could happen later."
Torre said a healthy Kuo could change the dynamics of his bullpen, which has lost Ronald Belisario and Cory Wade to injuries, although Wade is already on a rehab assignment and Belisario might join him before the week is over.
"He can be an eighth-inning piece," Torre said of Kuo. "We have no problem with him responsibility-wise. Out of the box, whether that's tonight is another story."
The Dodgers made room for Kuo on the 40-man roster by moving outfielder Xavier Paul from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day list. Paul, originally sidelined by a staph infection, is still hobbled by a microfracture of the left ankle he suffered while on a rehab assignment, but he is making enough progress to have begun baseball activities.
After Sunday's game, infielder Blake DeWitt was optioned back to Albuquerque to make room for Kuo on the active roster. It was DeWitt's fifth return to Albuquerque this year. No Dodger has made the round trip from Los Angeles to Triple-A more than three times since at least 1988.
Ken Gurnick is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

TOUCHSCREEN TURNTABLES - nicca what?
Posted by dOs1 Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 2:49 PM
Final Product // ATTIGO TT from Scott Hobbs on Vimeo.
Invented by Scott Hobbs at Dundee University, the touchscreen turntable takes the Serato waveforms and puts them on 2 big touchscreens so you can manipulate them directly with your hand, in place of a record. Is this wack?? I don’t know…it is what it is. You can argue that all this technology is killing the art of DJing, but at some point we have to abandon our old tools for newer, more efficient ones. I could sit home and make butter with a butter churn and “keep it real”, but I’d rather go down to the store and just buy some butter. I think technology is cool, and I’m all for it, but if you ain’t got no skills, there’s no space-age turntables that can help you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 2PAC
Posted by dOs1 Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 10:18 AM
Tupac Shakur was a member of the hip-hop group Digital Underground, whose 1990 album featured the hits "Humpty Dance" and "Doowutchyalike." In 1992 he began his solo career, and his debut album 2Pacalypse Now propelled him to stardom and made him one of the more prominent practitioners of gangsta rap. His other albums and appearances in movies such as Juice (1992) and Poetic Justice (1993) helped him to become a mainstream pop artist. Shakur made headlines over a string of run-ins with the law, and in 1994 he was robbed and shot five times. He recovered and in the next year released the successful albums Me Against The World and All Eyez on Me. Embroiled in a complicated feud with fellow gangsta rappers, Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas in 1996.

Shepard Fairey’s OBAMA in the Smithsonian?
Posted by dOs1 Monday, May 18, 2009 at 10:58 AM
If the SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION has its way, a giant fine art version of SHEPARD FAIREY’s iconic portrait of the now-president elect BARACK OBAMA will enter the collection of its NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY as the first official fine art rendering of the future president. The only hitch? Money. The $75,000 price tag for the piece, which was created by Fairey as the centerpiece of his “Manifest Hope†Obama art show that took place in Denver during this year’s DNC, must be raised through donations, though word on the street is that the museum is close to meeting this figure. As if having a street artist with a criminal record branding a presidential campaign weren’t enough, this move can definitely be filed under the headers of “Hope,†and “Progress.â€

Goldie predicts a riot in urban art
Posted by dOs1 at 9:54 AM
One picture is a self-portrait of the artist, an aerosol can in one hand and swearing with the other. Goldie has always been one to make a statement. The drum'n'bass pioneer's latest exhibition, The Kids Are All Riot, is a retrospective of his artworks, depicting social decay and youth culture.
"Kids have really been abandoned. Social community centres seem to have dissipated and there doesn't seem to be a community spirit. I've grown up on estates and to go back and see those places, it's not changed for the good. There's a loss of sense of belonging for kids – it's the reason they turn to urban art and music."
It's also why Goldie, now 43, started teaching urban art to kids more than 20 years ago. Goldie, who was himself a street artist and a youth club member, received after-school tuition from his art teacher while his first exhibition, staged when he was just 18, was funded by the arts council.
"I would teach kids across estates the hidden code of graffiti, to give them good composition. Many are still going as artists today," he says.
Tumor and Temper, two former students of Goldie who have made names for themselves as artists, are the proof.
"You can put a kid through graphic art school but if you teach a kid graffiti it's a different ball game," Goldie argues. "It's free-style. I've learned so much from graffiti. It's like going to the finest university in the world. It's down to experience – trial and error. Graffiti still has some bad connotations but that's so Eighties. When you learn a form of graffiti, if you can achieve the things I did when I was 18 to 25, you can do any form of art."

SKREAM!!!
Posted by dOs1 at 10:38 AM
At first Skream specialised in one flavour of dubstep: dark. His clipped, techy minimal style became a trademark sound. Long before grime existed, it reflected dark murky streets and sinister nights, the sound of decaying London and its frustrated communities, stuck out in satellite towns and sink estates with nothing but a PC and freely available software to channel their frustration into. Stuck in front of a PC for days on end, that's exactly what Skream did. Then two years ago Digital Mystikz burst onto the dubstep scene, expanding the sound with new flavours and vivid colours. Skream became even more inspired. It not like he wasn't prolific already - rumour has it he's made over 1500 tracks - but out poured a host of bright new tracks from the wonderkid. Indian remix took him into trippy Asian territories, Cheeky... into Arabia, his unreleased mixes of Sunship fused Jamaican dancehall smut with hooky Kraftwerk melodies. "Smiling Face" broke out cheerful reggae skanks on dancefloors. But his biggest tune was yet to come. Enter Midnight Request Line - on Tempa records - an anthemic explosion of electro arpeggios and dub sub-bass. It's a tune you can sing along to: Skream has it as his own ringtone. When it got dropped by DJ Youngsta at club Forward» grime dons Wiley, Jammer and the rest of Roll Deep began to shock out, flashing their lighters out of hard earned respect. The flip of this mighty release is bassline boomer "I," an excursion into deep dub basslines and shifting cinematic textures. ***Since the huge success of Midnight Request Line UK & International DJ gigs have been coming thick and fast, with Skream getting a rapturous response at New York's rammed Dub War event, as well as at shows in Leeds, Belgium, Bristol & Germany. He's also been busy releasing classic after classic on the popular Skreamizm EPs, now into the second volume. From the Amen heavy rinse out of Lightning Dub, to the masterclass in LFO-wobbling sub-bass Blipstream, these tracks are rewound at every dubstep rave, have received glowing reviews and are appearing in sets by DJs as diverse as Mr Scruff, FreQ Nasty & Ricardo Villalobos.*** It shouldn't come as any surprise he likes sub-bass, Skream has grown up around it. His older brother was a member of Croydon's notorious jungle hell-raising raving outfit Intanatty Crew, which featured Radio 1's Grooverider and Bailey's 1Xtra as members. Ollie, Skream's real name, is no stranger to a bit of hell raising himself, famous for his up-for-it behaviour at parties or out on the town. In fact he's the only known music artist with a subdued alter-ego. Most rock stars are quiet by day with flamboyant alter-egos. Our wonderkid is the other way around. But then that's wonderkids like Skream for you: unique.

It's Always Something
Posted by dOs1 at 8:59 AM
As you climb a dark stairway, dub bass reverberates off the walls from the second story chamber. Posted along the walls are spectators & performers and the dance floor is spinning with b-boys & b-girls. As the DJ cuts with precision like a switchblade, the MC goes mental into the microphone, swaying about in the dark, pushing his message to all who open their ears.In an world dominated by industry standards and classifications, comes a multi-talented duo capable of blazing a drum and bass show, as well as a hip hop show, or a combination of both.Rewind to '99 to find 360 rising thru the ranks of the Southeastern drum n bass scene with the innovative Straight Out Da Lab (SODL) crew with DJ Kaotic. Meanwhile, Fi3Ld (pronounced Field) was making a name for himself by smashing soundsystems with the legendary Outthabox (OTB) crew. After being billed on the same show, these crews began working in tandem to elevate the level of the expanding drum n bass & hip hop scene on the Southern US coast. Thus began their never-ending search for venues and outlets to release their sounds.Fast forward to the present, to a time where digital dominates across the board to find these two devising a way to collide the synthetic with tangible turntables and microphones. Along the way, they've encountered numerous DJ/MC combos, but few have collaborated as long as these two - thus giving them an undeniable and unmatched energy and sound. At the end of the day - it's all about freedom of expression. Everybody wants to get their music out there and people know commercial stations play it safe. These culture heads use any avenue available to get their brand to the eyes and ears of the masses.
